Op donderdag 16 juni werd Verhildersum verrast met een bezoek van een nazaat van de familie Van Starkenborgh uit Washington DC. Barthold Tjarda Van Starkenborgh Bloomfield – Clagett (34) en zijn echtgenoot Adam Adam Bloomfield- Clagett (40) kwamen met hun tweeling Lila en Silas (3) en familie naar Verhildersum. “Uniek om zoiets mee te mogen maken”, zegt directeur Monique Spaltman. “Verhildersum onderscheidt zich van de andere borgen doordat er op Verhildersum diverse portretten hangen van de bewoners uit vroeger tijden. Vooral van de familie Van Starkenborgh die van 1587 tot 1822 eigenaar was van de borg en er zomers verbleef. Het belangrijkste portret hangt in de grote zaal en is meteen het grootste familieportret van Nederland. Het familieportret is aan Verhildersum geschonken door de overgrootouders van Barthold. Echt een bezienswaardigheid en publiekstrekker, want de Nachtwacht is amper een meter groter. Voor de nazaten is het bovendien heel spannend om te zien of er nog gelijkenis is te bespeuren.”

Barthold, Adam, de kinderen en familie van Adam voelden zich thuis bij Verhildersum. Barthold vertelde dat de grote zaal bij Verhildersum wel lijkt op de inrichting van de boerderij van zijn tante Fendi Clagett in Baltimore. De Groninger wortels zijn nog altijd van belang voor de familie die al generaties in Amerika leeft. Zo waren er maar twee keuzes mogelijk voor zijn naam, toen Barthold geboren werd: hij zou Barthold heten of Schelte. Niemand heet Barthold in Amerika. Overigens schijven ze zijn naam daar al Bartholt, want die d op het eind is daar geen doen. En zijn oma heeft altijd haar Nederlandse paspoort gehouden, al werd ze in Amerika geboren. De familie wist veel te vertellen over de historie en hun Groninger wortels. Barthold voelt zich nog altijd verbonden. Zelfs Adam, de echtgenoot van Barthold, blijkt er veel van te weten. Intussen vermaakten de kinderen zich ook. Zij werden bij aankomst in ridderpak en prinsessenjurk gehesen en speelden hun rollen met verve. En dan de hamvraag: lijkt Barthold op zijn voorouders? Daarover deden ze geen uitspraak, maar volgens Adam zeggen alle vrienden in Amerika dat Barthold Van Starkenborgh echt Nederlandse looks heeft.

Barthold Tjarda Van Starkenborgh Bloomfield – Clagett (34) and his husband Adam Adam Bloomfield- Clagett (40) came to Verhildersum with their twins Lila and Silas (3) and family. “Unique to be able to experience something like this”, says director Monique Spaltman. “Verhildersum distinguishes itself from the other borgs because there are various portraits of the residents of the past on Verhildersum. Especially from the Van Starkenborgh family, who owned the deposit from 1587 to 1822 and stayed there during the summer. The most important portrait hangs in the main hall and is immediately the largest family portrait in the Netherlands. The family portrait was donated to Verhildersum by Barthold's great-grandparents. A real attraction and crowd puller, because the Night Watch is barely one meter larger. It is also very exciting for the descendants to see whether there is still a resemblance to be found.”

Barthold, Adam, Adam's children and family felt at home at Verhildersum. Barthold said that the large hall at Verhildersum resembles the layout of his aunt Fendi Clagett's farm in Baltimore. The Groningen roots are still important to the family that has lived in America for generations. There were only two choices for his name when Barthold was born: he would be called Barthold or Schelte. Nobody is called Barthold in America. Incidentally, they already write his name there Bartholt, because that d at the end is not a thing there. And his grandmother has always kept her Dutch passport, even though she was born in America. The family knew a lot about the history and their Groningen roots. Barthold still feels connected. Even Adam, Barthold's husband, seems to know a lot about it. Meanwhile, the children enjoyed themselves too. On arrival they were dressed in knight's suits and princess dress and played their roles with verve. And then the key question: does Barthold resemble his ancestors? They made no statement about this, but according to Adam all friends in America say that Barthold Van Starkenborgh really has Dutch looks.
