Heritage breeds
Very special livestock is grazing in Verhildersum’s fields. Our thoroughbred Blaarkoppen and Lakenvelders are heritage breeds. Because of their beautiful colouring (black or red with a white ‘belt’ around the middle) Lakenvelders (Dutch Belted) were frequently kept at estates. Blaarkoppen (Blister Heads) have been around in Groningen for centuries and were drawn by artists as early as the Middle Ages. Both breeds were kept as dairy as well as beef cattle. During the season - weather permitting - the cows can be seen in the fields surrounding the Farm Museum.
