Farm

The old Farm is home to various exhibitions, both in the old and new barn. The old barn’s interior is a replica of what a Groningen farm would have looked like in the Summer of 1870. It tells the story of what is was like to live and work on the farm before agricultural mechanisation. The new space houses an exhibition on agriculture, arts and crafts and smaller (changing) exhibitions. We also organize various events here.

The front part of the house Welgelegen is not open to the public.

Farmers Market
Every 3rd Saturday of the month you can shop for local produce and delicious treats at Verhildersum’s farmyard (Dijkstilsterweg 4). Click here for more information.

The Eagle plow
The star of our agricultural machinery collection is the Eagle plow. After visiting the United States of America in 1850, Cornelis Borgman introduced this plow to Groningen. Because of its shape and light weight it only required a third of the pulling force needed before to work the heavy clay soil. The Eagle plow was a massive success and contributed to a major innovation in agriculture; and consequently increased the wealth of the Hogeland people. In the video on the right you can see how much more efficient the Eagle plow is.
