Verhildersum's Gardens
A symmetrical formal garden with renaissance and baroque influences
The Borg’s garden is a symmetrical formal garden with renaissance and baroque influences. Apart from its borders with perennials and annuals and a herb garden, it has over 90 varieties of roses and over 50 varieties of clematis. The alcove and benches beckon you to sit down and feast your eyes on Eddy Roos’ sculptures.
Golden Ratio at Verhildersum
The garden’s construction was initiated by Mrs. T.F. Clevering-Meijer, assisted by landscape architect Mrs. Boon from Hoogezand. Together they decided the garden should be designed in baroque style. The garden is laid out according to the principles of the Golden Ratio, as are the main ratios of Eddy Roos’ sculptures. The Golden Ratio is the mathematical division of a line into two parts, where the ratio between the shorter part (a) and longer part (b) is equal to that of the longer part (b) and the longer part and the sum of both parts. Applying the Golden Ratio in art is supposed to be especially aesthetically pleasing.
