Tjarda van Starkenborgh Family Portrait
Verhildersum’s main hall boasts a large painting of the Tjarda van Starkenborgh family. One of the largest family portraits in the Netherlands, it depicts Allard Tjarda van Starkenborgh and his wife Gratia Susanna Clant van Scheltkema Nijenstein and their ten children alive at the time. The children who died earlier are symbolized by the angels at the top of the painting. Edzard Jacob, future Lord of Leens, is in the middle wearing a red skirt. The portrait was painted by Martinus van Grevenbroeck in about the year 1674. It is the biggest family portrait of the Netherlands.
