Noble life in the 19th century

Noble life in the 19th century

At Museum Borg Verhildersum, you will experience the history of Groningen through the eyes of the nobility, the farmer and the farm labourer in the 19th century. In the farmhouse are stories of peasant families Borgman and Mansholt, old crafts and the exhibition of Groningen fashion and costume: Ín lagen gedragen'. The workers' cottage shows that the labourer lived in very different conditions.

The borg shows the life of the nobility in the 19th century. For centuries, the Verhildersum borg was owned by the Tjarda van Starkenborgh family. Just in the 19th century this came to an end; in 1823 notary Van Bolhuis bought the borg. The interior partly dates from that time and also from before.

Indeed, as is still the case today, furniture that was already there and is still beautiful often stays. In the case of Verhildersum, the large cushion cabinet in the dining room comes from the Van Starkenborgh family, as does the largest family portrait in the Netherlands that hangs in the great hall.

Very special is that there are so many portraits of the former occupants on display. Both of the Van Starkenborgh family and the Van Bolhuis family. Furthermore, the borg is decorated as if the residents were away for a while and will return soon.
