Exhibition of woodcuts VRIJDAG students
Ons Schathoes, restaurant on the Verhildersum estate, is hosting an exhibition of woodcuts this summer. Starting May 10, you can come and admire students' creations every Wednesday through Sunday.
Students woodprinting
The 28 participants in this exhibition have all followed one or more courses in wood printing with Marjolein Terwindt in the graphics workshop of VRIJDAG (formerly the Arts Center) in the Walstraat in Groningen. Through thorough knowledge of materials and learning the different possibilities within the technique, the students arrive at an individual product.
In this diverse exhibition you can see works made in 1 print, but also works built up in multiple color layers. Large and small, abstract and figurative. Multiple copies of most of the woodcuts are for sale, with or without frames.
The woodcut
Using gouges and knives, parts of a wooden board are lowered. The planes and lines that remain are smeared with ink and printed on paper. In this way a series of woodcuts is made, the grain of the wood and the unruliness of the material giving the result its own character.
This is how texts and illustrations were multiplied in Western Europe from the 15th to the 17th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, artists rediscovered wood printing and today this ancient craft is used as an art form.
