Exhibition Harry Cock Looks North

SAVING EVERYDAYNESS

Around 1980 Harry Cock began photographing on commission. Because he lives in Assen, logically he received many commissions in the north of The Netherlands. Ostensibly, clients determined the contents and looks of photographs. However, as Harry found out, “you are what you capture on screen”. He came to this realization in the early days of his career as a journalistic and documentary photographer.

“Many journalistic subjects were not interesting photographically, but since I was on the scene anyway and often had to wait a long time for the 'moment suprême', I focused on things around it. The demand to capture things and events shifted to the personal. Starting in the 1980s, I dedicated myself to keeping a diary. I called the diary pictures 'Saving Everydayness'.”

Images from the diaries are brought together in this exhibition in the Coach House of Museum Borg Verhildersum. The images tell of the changes that are inescapably taking place in the north of the Netherlands.
