Wealth of Groninger farmers could be seen in clothing
Especially the Groninger farmers who lived near Verhildersum, on large farms along the Groninger Waden coast, became very wealthy in 19th century. This was due to the arrival of the Eagle Plough, brought to Groningen from America by Cornelis Borgman around 1850. Land yields were rising and grain prices were high due to the war in Russia, in the Crimea.
The wealth of the Groninger farmers from this region, called the Hogeland, can be seen back today in the beautiful farms. And in the clothes they wore; much of which Verhildersum was able to preserve. Peasant women ordered fabrics from all over the world and sewing patterns from Paris. They wore the latest fashion, often with a Groningen twist referring to the traditional costume. Everything was handmade and with very fine details.
